Skvyra

A settlement existed in the days of Kyivs'ka Rus'. The origin of the name has come from the Skvyrka river on which the town is situated. In 1616 king Sigizmund II granted the Magdeburg Right. In 1648 - 1654 it was a squadron town of Bila Tserkva regiment.

The emblem of the Russian period

 

 

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 22nd of January 1796. In the upper part of a per fess shield there was Bratslavs'ka emblem, in the lower part - the emblem given by king Sigizmund III. In a sable field there was a picture of an or fortress wall with a gate. Over the gate - a tower with a cross in a crown.

B.Kene project

 

 

In 1860 B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town - in a sable field is an or fortress wall. The emblem of Kyivs'ka province was in the canton. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three embattlements and within two or spikes entwined with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The soviet emblem

 

 

It was confirmed at Jule, 7th, 1989 by the decision N110 of city council executive committee. In an azure field on a vert base is or fortification with open gate and the tower, above the tower is gules star. In the canton is the chestnut blossoming branch of natural color in a gules field. In the chief of or cartouche is the sable city name, in its base are sickle and hammer.

Fortification means stability, it is part of the 1591 arms. A gules star means heroism of city dwellers during wars. The author is B.Shulevs'kyi.
