Yalta

It was founded by Greek colonists under the name of Yalita (Galita). In the XIV - XV centuries it was under the power of the Genoeses. Since 1475 - under the power of Turkey. Since the end of the XVIII century the town belonged to Russian Empire.

The emblem of the Russian period

 

 

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 17th of November 1844. In an azure field two branches in cross, one of which was laurel and the other - vine. The vine with bunches denoted viticulture developing on the south coast of the Crimea. The laurel branch denoted the only place in Russia where bay-trees could grow outdoors. The laurel branch reminded also about the victory at the village of Shumi near Alushta (Yalta ditrict) in 1774 by general Michael Golenishchev-Kutuzov. The victory was over the Turkish landing force. There the never-to-be-forgotten general got his famous in the history of medicine wound in the eye.

B.Kene project

 

 

On the 14th of March 1868 B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town: in an azure field sermy by argent grape leaves is an or laurel branch. In the canton there was an emblem of Tavrijs'ka province. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three embattlements and was put on two or anchors connected by the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The soviet emblem

 

 

It was confirmed at December, 12th, 1968 by the decision N659 of city council executive committee. In an azure field with abaised engrailed fess from azure and white strips is or rising sun with two crossed or branches - laurel and grape with a branch. The gules chief is charged by the or city name. The board is placed in or cartouche with or sickle with hammer and the gules star in top. The author is O.Mylashevych.
