It appeared as a Scythian settlement. It got the name after becoming the capital of the Crimean khanate.

B.Kene project

B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town - in an vert field there was an argent minaret with sable windows accompanied in dexter chief and in sinister base with or crosses and with an or crescent and argent coins in chief. In the canton there was an emblem of Tavrijs'ka province. The emblem symbolized a tangle of Christian and Muscleman traditions and it also underlined an economic role of the town in the past (coins). The emblem was not confirmed.
