Zaporizhzhia

The town is situated on the banks of the Dnipro where place the river is divided by the Khortytsia island. The territory of that town was inhabited in the Scythian days. During XV-XVI centuries real masters of the land behind the Dnipro rapids were Zaporozhian Cossacks. In 1775 tsarina Catherine ordered to destroy Zaporozhian Sich. The formation of the town Olexandrivsk On the territory of Sich was connected with the constructing the Dnipro fortification.

The emblem of the Russian period

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 29th of July 1811. In the upper part of a per fess with vert and purple shield two rifles were put crosswise. In the lower part there was a sable bow with three arrows turned down which symbolized the might of our arms and the weakness of the Tartars.

B.Kene project

In XIX century B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town. In an or field there is gules sword with the edge turning upward, under him - an azure bow with the same arrows. In the canton there is an emblem of Katerynoslavs'ka province. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three towers and framed with two or ears, which are twined with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The soviet emblem

It was confirmed at October, 5th, 1967 by the decision є488 of city council executive committees. Board per pale as 2:1 by gules and azure. In the circle formed by or metal, flowing from the argent ladle, and half sable gear, is or contour of Dnipro hydroelectric power station. In the right part of a shield is or city name in fess. In the argent chief are the cossack sabre, a bandura and horse-tail, that mean famous pages of the Zaporizhzhya cossacks. The author is V.Storozhuk.

The modern emblem

The shield per fess by vert and crimson. In the first part are two crossed cossack muskets. In the second part is sable bow with three arrows down. The shield is edged by or cartouche and crowned by or Dniproges electric power station.

The gonfalon

There is crimson rectangular panel with side ratio as 2:3 and city emblem in the center.
