Bilhorod-Dnistrovs`kyi

It appeared in the VI century B.C. as a Greek settlement Tira. In the XII - XIII centuries it was part of Galyts'ko-Volyns'ke principality. Since 1484 it belonged to Turkey. A Slavic name Belgorod was changed into Akkerman - white fortress. Since 1806 it was a part of Russia. In 1918 - 1940 it was under the jurisdiction of Romania.

The emblem of the Russian period

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 28th of April 1826. In a gules field there was a vine to signify abundance of grapes.

B.Kene project

In 1872 B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town - a shield per fess with a gules embatted fess. In the upper part there were three crosswise gules spikes. In the lower argent part there was a sable crescent with its points down. In the canton the emblem of Besarabs'ka province. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with three embattlements and within two or spikes entwined with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander. The emblem was not approved.

The emblem of the Romanian period

The emblem of the Romanian period was confirmed in 1930. In a gules field there was a fortress wall with three round towers and ridge-roofed. The middle tower was the highest with the windows shut and with the embattlements. It was situated on a sable terrace that faced the sea. Over a gate there was a shield with the emblem of Moldova. The emblem symbolizes the old Moldavian guard. The shield is crowned with an argent mauerkrone with seven embattlements.

The soviet emblem

It was confirmed at January, 18th, 1980 by the decision N51 of city councils. In a gules board is the argent fortress, azure base is charged by or anchor. The author is V.Denysov.
