The first written mention refers to 1576.

In 1635 it was given the Magdeburg Right and an emblem - a shield on which in a purple field there was a big or four-pointed cross with radiance.

Since 1648 it was a squadron town.

The emblem of the Russian period

The emblem of the Russian period was confirmed on the 4th of June 1782. In a purple field there was a big or four-pointed cross with radiance.

On the 28th of July 1992 town council session has confirmed the emblem of 1778 as an official symbol.

B.Kene project

At 22.12.1864 B.Kene worked out a project of a new emblem of the town. In an gules field the or cross with broad extremities,with the same rays in angles. In the canton there was an emblem of Poltavs'ka province. The shield is crown with an argent mauerkrone with three towers and frame with two or ears, which are twine with the ribbon of the Order of St.Alexander.
